VIDALIA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS TRACK TEAM FINISHES AS CLASS AA STATE RUNNER UP
The Vidalia High School Boys Track Team finished as state runner up in the boys state track meet held in Jefferson Georgia. On Thursday the team competed in the field event finals scoring 23 points. Shon Jones placed 2nd in the triple jump with a jump of 47’ ½”and placed 4th in the Long Jump with a jump of 21’ 10 ½ “. Devin Johnson placed 3rd in the shot put with a personal best throw of 51’ 2 ½ “and 5th in the discus with a personal best throw of 147’ 11”. On Friday the team competed in the preliminary running events and qualified for the finals in 7 of the 10 running events. In the finals on Saturday, the 400 meter relay team won the state title with a time of 42.09. The team consisted of Karen McKinney, Deon Green, Keshawn Williams, and Nate McBride. At this time, the Indians then moved to first place on the leader board with a score of 33 points . In the 400 meter dash, Shon Jones finished 5th with a personal best of 50.51. Deon Green finished 5th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.20 and 4th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.61. In the 110 high hurdles, Tyquan Powell finished 8th. At this point, the standings on the board were Vidalia in first place with a score of 47 points and Wesleyan in second with a score of 43. In the next race, the 300 intermediate hurdles, Tyquan Powell finished second with a personal best time of 40.51. Wesleyan finished first and third in this event and took the lead with 59 points versus 55 points for Vidalia. In the final running event, the 1600 meter relay, Wesleyan finished first and Vidalia finished third with a time of 3:26.0 which was a personal best for the team and a school record. The team consisted of Chris Jones, Tyquan Powell, Mielon Parrish, and Shon Jones. The final score for the state track meet was 69 for Wesleyan and 61 for Vidalia.
According to Coach Ladson Helms this year has been an exciting and memorable year for Vidalia High School Track. He is very proud and appreciative of the hard work and dedication shown by the young men. As the season progressed, the performances and times improved due to tremendous desire of the boys to continue to get better. He stated that their hard work paid off in a state runner up title in a very competitive state track meet with many talented athletes.
