The Vidalia Indian Wrestling team has spent ten days of the month of June at various wrestling camps. Members of the high school and middle school teams attended camps. The members of the team that attended one or more of the camps were Nyshun Bell, Ben Beverly, Grady Blount, Cory Braddy, Chason Brogdon, Dawson Campbell, Jesse Conley, Thomas Godbee, Kolby Hulett, Chris Jones, Kaleb Matthews, Austin Mazzeo, Markevious Mincey, Simon Minjarez, Lawson Paradice, Elijah Thornton, Alderreis Tillery, Noah Tippett, Damien Townsel, Hunter Manning, Tahjah Watts, Zack Edwards, Krishon McRae, and Kyare Conaway. The first camp the team attended was at Lambert High School in Suwanee, Georgia. Four-time NCAA All-American and current Central Michigan University (CMU) assistant, Ben Bennett, and one of his current wrestlers conducted the clinic. The clinicians focused on single leg attacks and escapes from the bottom. “The Central Michigan camp was great for our kids because there were kids from the surrounding North Atlanta schools for us to wrestle live. Our kids get tired of practicing with each other,” commented Coach Bobby Blount. During that three day stay in Suwanee, the team traveled to Madison County one evening for a three hour open mat session which included Madison County, North Oconee, and Central Habersham. Another day, the team traveled to Stone Mountain. Some wrestlers scaled the mountain, others stay below, and some did both. “Stone Mountain was a special opportunity for many of our kids to see one of our state’s great landmarks. Coach Blount and I scaled the mountain trail with the kids. We weren’t going to let the kids get the better of us. It’s a long way up, wow,” stated Indian Head Wrestling Coach, Dr. James Ferry.

The second camp the team attended was the annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Wrestling Camp at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia. While the CMU camp was tough with two a day practices; the FCA Wrestling Camp schedule was even tougher. Athletes wake at 7 am, practice 9 am to 10:30 am, dual meet (live) until 11:30, lunch, practice 2 pm to 3:30 pm, dual meet until 4:30, supper, practice 6 pm to 7 pm, Dual meet (live) until 7:45, church service 8:30 to 9:30, small group until 10 pm, and finally lights out at 11 pm. “The FCA camp is very organized and highly structured. The athletes get a ton of wrestling and strong Christian component added,” remarked head JR Trippe coach, Steve Fullam. The instructors at FCA Wrestling camp were 1980 Olympian John Azavedo, 1976 Olympian Alternate and Pan Am Games Medalist Mike McArthur, Two-Time NCAA All American and current head coach of the 2015 NCAA Champion The Ohio State University Tom Ryan, 2016 NCWA National Champion Emmanuel College head coach Jake Brumblelow, and NCAA Division II wrestling power house Shorter University head coach and former NCAA All American Josh Henson. The four day camp focused on all aspects of wrestling and a strong Christian life style.

The final camp occurred two weeks later and was held at Vidalia High School. The Fourth Annual Storm Center Cradle and Takedown Camp was held with the primary instructor the founder of the Storm Wrestling Center (SWC), NCAA All-American, NJCAA National Champion, Three-Time undefeated GHSA State Champion, Gerald Carr. Coach Carr’s three day focus is on a series or system of wrestling. He focuses on wrestling from the takedown, to turning for points, to turning for pins. Coach Ferry specified, “I like the way Coach Carr teaches wrestling as a system and not just individual moves that the athletes are supposed to pull out of the air.” The SWC Camp was open to all schools and wrestlers of all ages. Parents are encouraged to mark the last week in June for next year to send their kids to this vital wrestling camp right here in their own back yard.

Coach Ferry would like to thank the Vidalia Sports Boosters and our local FCA chapter for donating a significant portion of the camp fees. Without these two groups we would not have been able to attend such a vital source of wrestling and been able to participate in a wonderfully unique experience. We are currently seeking a sponsor for the annual SWC Camp held in Vidalia. Contact Coach James Ferry if interested. Like us on Facebook at Vidalia Wrestling.
