Dooley kicks 46 yard field goal
Dooley kicks 46 yard field goal

The Vidalia Indians used drives of 99 and 80 yards to score two touchdowns and a 46 yard field goal by Brennan Dooley to knock off the Toombs County Bulldogs 17-14 Friday night at The Reservation. With the win the Indians move to 6-1 on the year and 3-0 in Region 2AA play.

The Indians avoided disaster on the opening kickoff when Jackie Robinson couldn’t handle the opening kickoff and the ball went out of bounds at the one yard line.

From there, the Indian offense would chew up yardage on short carries by Jaedyn Stanley and Bryce Davis picking up five first downs during a 99 yard drive which took 9 minutes and 50 seconds off the clock and was capped off by a Bryce Davis 43 yard pass to Antrevion Williams with 2:10 left to go in the opening quarter to take the lead 7-0 following a Tate McDaniel PAT.

Toombs would get two first downs driving the ball to the 46 yard line on their first possession before the Indians defense would stiffen forcing the Bulldogs to punt, which pinned the Indians at the 7 yard line.

The Indians would get a holding call on first down and would not be able to move the ball on their possession and was forced to punt from the 7 yard line. Dawson Ricks would nail a 42 yard punt which put Toombs at the Indian 49.

Five plays and two first downs later D.J. Mincey would take a ball of the right side and run by defenders 21 yards for the score to make it 7-7 following a successful PAT with 5:18 left to go in the half.

Vidalia would start at the 20 yard line on their next drive and Stanley would run off the right side 43 yards to the Toombs 32 yard line for a first down with a little over 4 minutes left in the half. Two penalties would stall the drive for the Indians bringing up a 4th down and short, setting up the Dooley 46 yard field goal which by all accounts is a Vidalia School record.

Toombs would garner one first down on their next possession and be forced to punt which was downed at the 26 yard line. The Indians would drive to the 49 before a penalty would take the ball back to the 45 yard line. Two plays later a pass to Jackie Robinson would set up a double pass play which broke down when a Toombs County defender would hit Marc Wardlaw as he attempted to throw the ball, which caused the ball to go forward which was called an incomplete pass by the side judge ending the half with Vidalia leading 10-7.

Neither team would be able to move the ball on their first possessions of the second half with both teams punting the ball away. But on the Bulldog’s second possession they would take their first lead of the night when Caleb Hartley would sprint 55 yards on second and eight for the score putting Toombs ahead 14-10 with 7:00 to go in the third quarter.

The Indians would answer the call on their next possession driving the ball 80 yards in 13 plays, picking up five first downs on the way to a Jaedyn Stanley 2 yard run to give the Indians a 17-14 lead with 1:21 to go in the third following McDaniel’s PAT.

Neither team would be able to move the ball on their next possessions, but Toombs would take the ball over with 9:36 to go in the game at their own 31 yard line and move it all the way to the Vidalia 2 yard line before the Indian defense would stiffen forcing a 21 yard field goal attempt which sailed wide to the right, preserving the Indian lead at 17-10 with 6:01 to go in the game.

The Indians would begin the final drive of the night at their own 20 yard line and two plays later would face a 3rd and 6 from the 24 yard line. Bryce Davis would look off a receiver in the flat and hit Marc Wardlaw for 20 yards and a first down keeping the drive alive at the 44 yard line. The Indians would convert on two more third down plays including a Davis 14 yard run with less than 2 minutes to play which sealed the deal giving the Indians their second win in a row in the series and inching them closer to a State Playoff berth.

The Indians ended the night with 352 total yards with Jaedyn Stanley leading the way with 167 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Bryce Davis added 74 yards on 17 carries and was 7 for 14 through the air for 87 yards and a touchdown to Antrevion Williams who led the way with 53 yards on two receptions.

The Indians will now hit the road, as they travel to Swainsboro to take on the #6 ranked Tigers with kick set for 7:30.
