Miss Pournelle is in her eighteenth year of teaching at Vidalia High School. She grew up in Soperton, Georgia, and graduated from Treutlen High School in 1999. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree in language arts from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2004, after which she earned her master's degree in education from Troy State University. Miss Pournelle has also directed the one-act play at Vidalia High School for seventeen years.
